Newcastle

Made famous by Percy French in his song “Where the Mountains of Mourne Sweep Down To The Sea”, Newcastle is overlooked by the highest peak in Northern Ireland, Slieve Donard. In this video local singer Finbar Keaveney leads local school children in singing the famous song. People for all parts of the world have tracked the 2796ft to the summit of Slieve Donard and looked down at the beauty of Newcastle and the surrounding area.

Newcastle is home to 2 golf courses, Royal County Down Golf Club and Mourne Golf Club and both are adjacent to the Slieve Donard Hotel. Rated fourth in the world by Golf Digest Magazine and rated the best course in the world outside the USA, Royal County Down presents an irresistible golf challenge set in spellbinding scenery.

Located next to the Slieve Donard Hotel after hosting the Irish Open in 2015, Former No 1 Golfer the South African Ernie Els said:
“As you will know I was lucky enough to stay at the Slieve Donard earlier this year for the Irish Open. It is not often that we get to walk to work and to be able to do that and stay in such an amazing setting with a rich history was fantastic”.

The other hotel in Newcastle is the Burrendale which is situated approx one mile from Newcastle Centre. The Burrendale Hotel was the dream of local builder the late Sean Small. Over recent years the Burrendale has expanded and with its leisure centre is a 4* hotel.
